Why So Much Bamboo?

Bamboo is one of those miracle woody plants that have a wide variety of potential uses. Bamboo has started to gain more acceptance in the home over the past decade and now can be found as a viable option for traditional textiles and building material. Bamboo also happens to have other very good benefits, namely its anti-microbial properties and potential for sustainable wood forestry.

Anti-Microbial Properties

The natural antibacterial properties of bamboo fabric come from an inherent quality of bamboo commonly called “bamboo kun.” Bamboo does not require the use of pesticides due to this natural antifungal antibacterial agent. It is rarely attacked by pests or infected by pathogen. The same natural substance that protects bamboo growing in the field, functions in the spun bamboo fibers. This makes it perfect for clothing and materials which may get wet and have a tendency to mildew.


Bamboo happens to be a green wood for a couple of reasons. First, it’s anti-bacterial properties mean that it does not require pesticides in order grow healthily. This eliminates the need to contaminate the soil and nearby freshwater resources with toxic chemicals. The second reason is that bamboo has a very high growth rate and does not need fertilizers. As a result, you can harvest more wood per unit of time than most other wood alternatives. The fact that it doesn’t need fertilizer also means that excess nutrients do not end up in local freshwater resources, preventing contamination.
