Copenhagen Wheel – High Efficiency Biking
I just came across this great invention recently from researchers at MIT. Basically it is a rear wheel replacement for bikes that will store energy that you create from braking and going down hills. It then uses the stored energy to help you go uphill and rider longer distances without as much fatigue.
This is made with the commuter and casual rider in mind and not really meant for the sportperson. One other great thing it does is track track your riding statistics and learns from the way you bike to create the most efficient use of your energy. The only downside is the cost: $700. But, I’m sure the price will go down as production increases. Take a look at the video to learn more!

Eco Friendly Furniture
Eco Friendly Furniture can refer to many different aspects of a piece of furniture. All of the furniture listed on BuyGreen.com meets at least one of their criteria to qualify it to be listed based on Source Material, Manufacturing, Use & Disposal.
Each and every product listed as a unique green score from 1 to 100 which lets you know how each item compares on an overall basis. Then they provide you with a link to a detailed listing of at least 25 attributes which effect the ranking.
Most of the furniture found on the website includes materials which are reclaimed, locally sourced or sustainably grown. they also look at how much energy was consumed to create and to ship the items as well as the packaging and how much of the furniture can be recycled when it has outlived its usefulness.
One of my personal favorites is the Wine Barrel End Table. It is manufactured from the leftover parts of the barrel, namely the oak barrel head and galvanized straps. They even re-use the original fastening rivets in the foot detail and add their own authentic cooper’s rivets in the table assembly.
Be sure to check out all of their unique and stylish eco friendly furniture for your home.

Why So Much Bamboo?
Bamboo is one of those miracle woody plants that have a wide variety of potential uses. Bamboo has started to gain more acceptance in the home over the past decade and now can be found as a viable option for traditional textiles and building material. Bamboo also happens to have other very good benefits, namely its anti-microbial properties and potential for sustainable wood forestry.
The natural antibacterial properties of bamboo fabric come from an inherent quality of bamboo commonly called “bamboo kun.” Bamboo does not require the use of pesticides due to this natural antifungal antibacterial agent. It is rarely attacked by pests or infected by pathogen. The same natural substance that protects bamboo growing in the field, functions in the spun bamboo fibers. This makes it perfect for clothing and materials which may get wet and have a tendency to mildew.
Bamboo happens to be a green wood for a couple of reasons. First, it’s anti-bacterial properties mean that it does not require pesticides in order grow healthily. This eliminates the need to contaminate the soil and nearby freshwater resources with toxic chemicals. The second reason is that bamboo has a very high growth rate and does not need fertilizers. As a result, you can harvest more wood per unit of time than most other wood alternatives. The fact that it doesn’t need fertilizer also means that excess nutrients do not end up in local freshwater resources, preventing contamination.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Baby Shower Invitations
- Pick a Theme: It’s always more fun to have a theme, whether it’s her favorite location, hobby or animal – make it all about something special to her and pick your shower invites to match.
- Pick a Color (but don’t go crazy): It seems obvious to pick a color theme, but you can go overboard with trying to find exact color matches. It’s more to create a consistent mood. Being able to match your plates exactly to your invitations to your goody bags is almost an impossible task. Pick a family of colors and get close – nobody will notice and having a few different shades adds to the personality.
- Go Eco: We’re obviously biased, but try throwing an eco baby shower. Of course, you can start with baby shower invitations printed on 100% recycled paper that are produced carbon free, but you can also extend that to the other aspects of the shower like asking people to make a donation to an eco cause or you can offset the carbon footprint for your party. Don’t forget to recycle everything you can!
- Baby Shower Games: OK – we draw the line here, we really can’t help with the baby shower games – sorry if that’s a let down. But if you have questions about your invitations, you’ve come to the right place. Good luck!
Composting, the process of converting kitchen and yard waste into valuable fertilizer, is the core activity of every gardener. Compost is the single most important supplement you can give your garden, and most gardeners complain that they never have enough! The easiest way to make sure you have some compost on hand is to have a composter and utilize all of your current kitchen scraps and yard waste for this vital gardening resource instead of clogging up our landfills with this great organic material.
Types of Composters
Composters are made in three basic styles – bins, tumblers, and continuous-use.
Compost bins are open on the bottom and set directly on the ground.
Compost tumblers are sealed composters which speed the process of composting.
Continuous-use composters have two chambers for separating finished compost from fresh materials, so there is no waiting for batches to finish.
To learn more about composting, be sure to read the EarthEasy Composting Guide with all the basics you need to know regarding composting. In addition there are a multitude of blog posts about composting on their website from what to do each season to what organic matter works best for your specific types of plants.
